Classroom Presentations Grades K–6

Kitsap County Solid Waste Division offers free, interactive presentations to educate K-6 students about:

Recycling • Litter• Sustainability • Household Hazardous Waste
Worm Bins • Solid waste management

Worms and Worm Bins

Target age group: K-6th grade
Length: 60-90 minutes

Bring wildlife into your classroom!  After learning about the importance of worms in the environment and their role in transforming garbage into natural  fertilizer, students receive magnifying lenses to examine worms up close. If desired, the worm bin may remain in the classroom for two weeks for additional activities.

Hazardous Consequences

Target age group: 2nd-4th grade
Length: 90 minutes

Using a tabletop watershed model, see how household hazardous waste can  not only be dangerous in the home, but can have unintended consequences downstream. Safer alternatives and safe disposal methods of household hazardous waste are explained.

Litter in Its Place  

Target age group: K-3rd grade
Length: 60 minutes

What is litter and how does it affect our environment? After listening to a story about the consequences of litter in our imaginary tour, students use role-play and interaction to earn how litter can create problems in their own community.

Closing the Loop  

Target age group: 3rd-6th grade
Length: 60 minutes

What do the three chasing arrows mean? By the end of the lesson, students know what the recycling symbol stands for and the importance of closing the recycling loop.  Game activities include a recycling relay race, and a puzzle to sequence steps for newspaper recycling.  Students are able to see and handle several items made from the materials they recycle at home and at school, including a T-shirt made from recycled plastic bottles!

Cautions and Warnings and Dangers, Oh My!

Target age group:
4th-6th grade
Length: 60 minutes

Students examine labels on common household hazardous products. Safer alternatives and their pro's and con's are discussed.  Students take part in a cleaning experiment with a commercial product and a safer alternative.

Face the Waste

Target age group: 4th-6th grade
Length: 60–90 minutes

Students are introduced to solid waste management strategies including waste reduction/recycling, land-filling, and incinerating. By assuming different roles within a simulated town meeting, students present and debate their viewpoints to arrive at a solid waste management plan that’s best for the community.
