The Magic of Recycling, performed by Steffan Soule a professional
Northwest magician, is an award winning show aimed at student audiences
learning about recycling and waste reduction. Steffan tears a piece of paper
into pieces then instantly “recycles” it while he explains the process and
benefits of recycling. “It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. Every
time you recycle a ton of paper you are saving our forest and our
environment,” he says while unfolding the torn paper into one whole piece.
The interactive performance gets students involved as he requests student
volunteers to help him recycle a glass bottle by magic and to balance a
student in mid air while expressing the need for us to balance our use of
resources. Recycling seems magical as the show inspires wonder, curiosity,
and encourages learning. Children have been captivated by Soule’s magic for
several years at the Kitsap Water Festival, and relate to his message
because they identify with the ability to make a change.

America Recycles Day is a national recycling awareness day celebrated
since 1997. The purpose of the day is to increase public participation in
recycling programs and to raise public awareness about the related issues of
choosing products with recycled content when shopping, reducing waste,
reusing materials, and composting.
As part of our Kitsap County celebration of America Recycles Day, public,
private, and home schooled K-8 students are invited to participate in the
America Recycles Day – Kitsap County poster contest. Winning posters in each
grade level will be turned into a full color 2007 calendar celebrating

Powerful Choices for the Environment is an environmental education program
that is changing how Washington State’s middle schools students and their
families think about and use natural resources in their daily lives.
Environmental education professionals, trained in science education and
local resource use from Puget Sound Energy deliver this hands-on four-day
program. The program is designed to empower 6-8th grade students across the
region with the knowledge that their choices do make a difference.
The Powerful Choices for the Environment program engages students in a
multitude of experiences and learning opportunities. The diversity of this
program enables teachers to enhance the development of essential learning -
not only in science, but all subject areas that will be assessed with WASL
testing in the future.
Note: Each period includes journal writing to allow students to express
their rationale for choices and practice articulating their ideas. This
skill is a key aspect of student accountability, especially on the
Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL).
