Paints and Stains

Latex paint is NOT a hazardous waste but when you are finished painting, leftover paint needs more attention than simply tossing it in the trash.
If your latex paint has a mold inhibitor added or there is more than two inches of paint left, bring it to the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Facility.

Although there is no charge for residents to use the HHW Collection Facility, latex paint costs around $3.25/ gallon to process. This is why we would like you to help us manage our costs by only bringing us what you can’t handle at home.

You can put latex paint into your regular garbage can IF the paint is dry or the can is empty. Take the lid off the can so it is obvious the paint is dry.
Tips for drying out paint – If there is less than an inch or two of paint left in the can:

  • Open the can in a well-ventilated area and let it dry out OR
  • Add clay-based kitty litter or instant concrete mix, stir well and let solidify.

Oil based paint and stains ARE hazardous waste and cannot be disposed of in your garbage if there is paint left in the can. Please bring oil-based paints and stains to the HHW Collection Facility. Empty cans are not considered hazardous and may be disposed of in your regular garbage can.

Swap Shop
If your latex or oil-based paint is in good condition, the label is still readable, and the can is at least ¾ full, our staff may put your paint into the Swap Shop so someone else can use it. There is no charge for the materials taken from the Swap Shop, however, every recipient must complete a form listing the date and all products taken. The Swap Shop, located at HHW Collection Facility, is open the same hours as the Facility.

REMEMBER -You can cut down on waste and save money!

  • Buy what you need!
  • Instead of buying a basecoat, use your leftover paint
  • Donate good, useable paint to organizations like Habitat for Humanity

Businesses
Business waste is accepted at the HHW Collection Facility by appointment only. Please contact Kitsap 1 at 360-337-5777 for details about Kitsap County’s business hazardous waste program or to schedule an appointment.
