Frequently Asked Questions

Can something be done about hard to recycle products?
Product Stewardship is an environmental management strategy meaning whoever designs, produces, sells, or uses a product takes responsibility for minimizing the environmental impact through all stages of the products life cycle.  It is the result of efforts of product stewardship groups that many retailers and manufacturers are providing take-back options for items like batteries and computer equipment.

What kinds of containers are available for businesses, and what can I put in them?
When businesses sign up for curbside recycling, they receive 64-gallon recycle carts for office paper, unless your company generates enough to fill a multi-yard container.  How many containers you receive depends on the quantity of recyclable materials you have.

Who do I call for curbside service?
On Bainbridge Island or inside the Poulsbo city limits, contact Bainbridge Disposal at 206.842.4882.  If you company is in unincorporated area of Kitsap County or inside the city limits of Bremerton or Port Orchard, contact Waste Management at 800.592.9995.   In the Central Kitsap area, you can also call New Day Recycling at 360.379.6200 or Recycle Earth at 888.876.1502.

Why can't I put shredded paper in the recycle bin?
Shredded paper gets caught in the machinery used to sort recyclables.  Also, the short fiber of shredded paper is not a good recycled paper feedstock.  Some alternatives include using shredded paper in your compost pile or worm bin, reuse it as packing material, or if you have a curbside yard waste cart, it can be recycled there.

Are there any organizations I could join sharing my company's philosophy?
Consider joining these organizations.  Members may receive recognition, be eligible for awards, and find networking opportunities through conferences, workshops, newsletters, or other venues.  Membership in any of these organizations is voluntary and most are free.
