Congregate Nutrition Services

 

Kitsap ALTC contracts to provide hot, pre-plated meals of at least 1/3 Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) nutritional value at nine regular meal sites and two Senior Outreach Support Center sites in Kitsap County.


The program:

  • serves meals to groups of seniors in a variety of settings across our county.

  • helps increase the nutrient intake of older individuals who might not eat adequately.

  • assists them to remain healthy and independent in their communities.

  • allows participants to form new friendships and to interact in a social environment.


 In addition, meals are made available for daily delivery to clients' homes in the greater Bremerton area Monday through Friday and frozen meals in bulk quantities, county-wide, to persons assessed as homebound and unable to provide for their own nutritional needs. Services are available to all Kitsap County residents age 60 years and older.

Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe also hosts a congregate meal site Monday through Friday.

Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP)

The SFMNP provides low-income seniors 60 years of age and older with vouchers to purchase fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs from authorized farmers' markets from July through October.

The program provides nutrition educational materials including:

  • recipes

  • nutrient values

  • food preparation information

  • food storage information

In Kitsap County there are farmers' markets and roadside stands participating in the program.
Homebound seniors may receive home-delivered produce baskets of similar content through the Home-Delivered Meals program(see below).

Home-Delivered Meals
 
Kitsap ALTC contracts with Meals on Wheels Kitsap for Senior Nutrition Services to provide home-delivered meal services in our county.
Home-delivered meals are provided to vulnerable older persons who are home-bound by reason of illness, incapacitating disability, or who are otherwise isolated.

This program intends to:

  • Maintain or improve health status
  • Support Independence
  • Prevent Institutionalization
  • Allow earlier discharge from hospitals, nursing homes, or other residential care facilities

Each meal served contains at least one-third of the current Recommendations Dietary Allowance (RDA) as established by the food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Science National Research Council.
