Public comment remains open for final draft of 2018-2023 county parks plan1/18/2018

The Kitsap County Parks Department continues to post revised drafts of the update to the 2012 Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Plan, after each public comment period. County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the plan at their regular business meeting February 12, which begins at 5:30 p.m. in Poulsbo City Hall, 200 Moe St. NE, Poulsbo. (Please note the special location of this meeting.)

The plan outlines goals, objectives, and strategies to address improvements and investment emphasis for the county park system that now encompasses over 10,000 acres. The preliminary draft was posted from early December through the first week of January for community and stakeholder review and comment. The plan has since been revised and the final draft is now posted on the Parks Department website linked to below.

Public input collected since last summer is incorporated into the final draft that identifies key issues, strengths, and opportunities; provides guidelines and policy direction for acquisition, development, and preservation; and ensures parks continue to serve as integral to the county's social and economic development.

The 2018-2023 PROS plan is required to be eligible for state and federal grants administered by the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office, and must be updated every six years. Parks Department staff, working together with members of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for the last six months, developed the plan outline and summary of policy direction, along with the public outreach strategy.

Community outreach, including public forums and participation in local events, identified the needs and concerns of county residents, and provided feedback and ideas on the future direction of the county parks system. More than 1,100 citizens responded to the survey.
